To all of our classmates
“Wonderful” does not do justice to the whirlwind of a weekend we spent together
celebrating 55 years of a shared past.
For those of you who were unable to attend, we promise you were missed.
One of our dear classmates was so happy she felt encouraged enough by
classmates to attend her first reunion. She said she will be at every other
one in the future. And that, dear friends, is why folks call and email and
urge you to attend or stay in touch. As the years go by, and more time is
spent in thought, we recognize more than ever how much that is true.
Even if an occasional email, PLEASE stay in touch. You ARE missed.
You are a part of us.
Each reunion we have attended has had a different feel.
As we age, our perspectives shift. Looking back, many of us were in
school together longer than others - some from kindergarten onward.
Many of us played together in common neighborhoods even before that.
Some of us became part of the shared scene later, at various stages.
But each of us brought different gifts to the collective.
And it is that collective we celebrate when we come together at these reunion events.
There are men reminiscing about their sporting feats. There are women
reminiscing about their lack of sporting opportunities. There are others laughing
about the almighty cliques amongst our adolescent selves: Collegiates, Jocks,
Floaters, Loners, Hoods, Dramas and on and on.
There are conversations about what we would do differently as teenagers
and how that influenced the raising of our own children.
There are conversations about children and grand children and beloved pets.
There are conversations about our health and ailments and how our attitudes
shape their effects on us. And of course, there are those more difficult
conversations about our losses. And we’ve all had them by now. Sadly.
But what we do not hear when we gather are conversations that exclude or
diminish or make folks feel uncomfortable. We have grown up.
Maybe not completely. We still have a childlike desire to have fun and
be silly and feel carefree. And of course, we still have opinions.
The difference is we know that others do as well. And by now we have learned
to temper our reactions with respect.
The way we see it is our shared past has created a family of cousins.
We may not always see each other, but we dare say, we’ll always
be there for one another. And through the years and the many
distractions of life that may have kept us apart, we feel a renewed sense of
appreciation at each of the reunions we’ve been lucky enough to attend.
And what makes this “family” even stronger are the loved ones of classmates
who have further enriched our lives with their presence.
The good news is we will not have to wait another five years to reunite.
We will start planning events at two-year intervals.
What would you enjoy? Please share your ideas.
And bless each and every one of you who came this past
weekend and those who we missed, but were in our hearts.
Photos are being added to a new photo website (sooner or later it will replace the Photobucket photo web site). It is a work in process, but there are many pictures from the Reunion Weekend ready to view.

For Those Who Left School Early
Waking in the morning
With the night tugging at me,
I go to school where
Glassmanor apartments and
River Houses come together
Everyone is in their spot
As a slow cruise begins
I never knew where I stood
Collegiate or Block?
Everyone of you was a star
In my first movie
But I didn’t have a camera.
I didn’t need one at the ABC Drive-In.
The theater was on Indian Head Highway
Named after the last nickel
I had in my pocket
But laughter is free
And I laughed so much
It drowned out the teachers sometimes.
In such a hurry to grow up,
I constantly tripped over myself
Eventually stumbling into the right girl.
I’m so lucky when I think of my friends.
I always see them as they were
The first day we met.
Some were girls who didn’t know
How paisley beautiful they were.
Now they can see in the yearbook.
The guys had chrome steel hearts
That could last a thousand years.
All we wanted to sing was
‘We Gotta Get Out of This Place’
By Eric Burdon and the Animals
But the principal wouldn’t let us.
How did he know we’d want to come back?
Let me get to the cinder track
And run a six minute mile like Coach said.
Let me dance in the cafeteria.
Let me huddle by the bridge
Where teenage dreams collided.
It was only three small years
Such a small slice of time
But it has lasted us this long
Let me drift through you
For just one night
And feel that day again
Sweet memories have to be taken in sips
So raise a glass to all those
Who left school early
And tell them to wait for us
In front of the lockers
At the edge of the glass walkway
High above the ground
Where sunlight steams through
Letting us know
That even winter can be warm.
